I really do love this time of year, with all its craziness and festivities! The children are just so full of joy and excitement, that it's hard not to catch their spirit! With that said, we are still hard at work here in 4K! Here's some of what's been going on ...
ELA: Students are excited to be working on a holiday research project here at school. Each partnership is researching a different winter holiday from around the world...some are fairly obscure! After researching basic information about the holiday, students will create a presentation to share with the class next week. Ask your child which holiday s/he is learning about!
We continue to work on parts of speech, with our most recent focus being adverbs. And, students have spent a lot of time creating a booklet called "Hooray for the Holidays" in which they are writing about holiday wishes, memories, and traditions. We will share these with each other next week, then they will come home for you to see!
MATH: All math classes took a test last week on chapter 5. Fractions will be our focus throughout the third quarter. A great thing to do for your child is to point out fractions as you use them in your daily life...when you're baking for the holidays, how much pizza is left, what fraction of the presents have bows, etc. This will help your child see the practical, everyday uses of fractions.
SCIENCE: After studying weathering, erosion, and deposition, we spent about a week learning about all the different landforms that cover earth. Now we are learning about the faster processes that can change earth's surface...volcanoes, earthquakes, floods, drought, etc. Students are always intrigued by the various forces of nature!
NEXT WEEK: One day next week, I would like to show your children the movie "Because of Winn-Dixie" since we just read the book. It will be my present to them and I will serve them treats and drinks. IT'S A SURPRISE, so please don't tell! Also, it is rated PG, so please let me know if you DO NOT want your child to watch this movie with us.
Here are some other specials things going on next week:
Monday, December 18: 4th graders wear green! (Bright Holiday Lights!)
Tuesday, December 19: Pajama Day! (no slippers) (Settle In for a Long Winter's Nap!)
Wednesday, December 20: Wear your favorite holiday sweater, hat, socks, scarf
and/or accessories! (Holiday Cheer Gear)
Holiday party @ 2pm!
Thursday, December 21: FIRST DAY OF BREAK! ENJOY!

Lots of Learning!
We are quickly heading towards the end of 2nd quarter...fourth grade is almost half over! This is a time of year when we are settled into our routines and a lot of learning happens on a daily basis. Here's what we've been up to:
ELA: The students (and I!) really enjoyed the book Because of Winn-Dixie. The characters were so well developed and lovable! We have completed some follow up work with this book and are in the midst of a final project. Two different times in the book, the main character, Opal, makes a list of 10 things about other characters. Our project is to list 10 things about ourselves. Your child might come home asking you to print pictures for this project, and I hope you are able to! Just computer printed pictures will work!
Before Thanksgiving, we had a story sharing party. Students had their realistic fiction stories on their desks, along with a note about what to look for/what they were most proud of in their stories. Then, we spent about half an hour walking around and reading each others stories, then writing a quick little note back about what we liked. The students really enjoyed getting to read each other's stories!
We finished the read aloud The Girl Who Could Fly, which the kids loved! It was my daughter's favorite read aloud from her 4th grade year. Now I am reading Wonder to the students. One thing we are doing at the end of each reading is writing a six word sentence to summarize the section just read. Students have a booklet to help record this thinking. This is such a beautiful book...if you have time, I think you'd love to read it, or take the family to see the movie! It really is a beautiful story and teaches so many "wonder"ful lessons.

MATH: Students in all math classes have tested on chapter 4, which covered long division, and have moved into chapter 5, which is about factors, multiples, prime and composite numbers. Please check with your child about his/her Reflex and/or SumDog requirements and make sure s/he is meeting them!
SCIENCE: We are back to science with earth science. In this section, we study earth's processes (weathering, erosion, deposition), as well as landforms and how they are formed. While at Centennial Park earlier this month, students were assigned a tree or rocky area to observe each time we go. These are areas that show much weathering/erosion and are a real life way to explore these concepts. There will be a landform project assigned after winter vacation.
SOCIAL STUDIES: LAST REMINDER...THE FIELD TRIP PROJECT IS DUE ON FRIDAY! I hope you enjoyed this project and your trip!
SPECIAL DAYS COMING UP:
Friday, December 15: Holiday Assembly
Monday, December 18: 4th graders wear green!
Tuesday, December 19: Pajama Day! (no slippers)
Wednesday, December 20: Wear your holiday clothes! Holiday party @ 2pm!
Thursday, December 21: FIRST DAY OF BREAK! ENJOY!

Important Info!
I'm going to start this post out with some important information and reminders...
SS PROJECT: The Social Studies field trip project is due on Friday, December 8. Time is flying here in 4K, and that due date is only 4 weeks away...and one of those weeks is Thanksgiving! Before your child turns the project in, please check to make sure that all elements listed in the packet are included!
MIDTERMS: We are about at the middle of second quarter. Grades were up-to-date as of last night...please check in to Progress Book to see how your child is doing.
MOVIE PERMISSION: To finish off our dog book unit, I would like to show the children a movie next week, Marley & Me: The Puppy Years. It is rated PG, so I need to know if you do NOT want your child to watch this movie. Please email me if that is the case. If I don't hear from you, that will mean that you are okay with your child watching the movie.
CORRECT & RETURN: Please check your child's take home folder daily, but especially on Mondays. Many children have been given papers marked "correct & return" and are not taking advantage of this opportunity to correct and learn from their mistakes, while at the same time improving the original grade. Correct & return papers are meant to be completed at home and returned to me so I can adjust the grade to reflect the corrections.
INSTAGRAM SURVEY: Please fill out the survey I sent home last week...I've gotten a positive response so far, but would like to hear from everyone! If you need me to resend it, just shoot me an email.
BOOK ORDERS: I am sending a set of book orders home today. This will be the only one between now and the holidays, and...BOOKS MAKE GREAT GIFTS! For some reason, I have not received the order forms for December, but all books available are shown online. If you'd like to order books for your child as a gift, please send me an email and I'll keep it a secret from your child...I will email you to come pick up the books when they are in.
Here's what we've been up to:
ELA: We moved into a whole class novel, Because of Winn-Dixie. This is a great book and the kids are enjoying it. We are studying character traits and motivations while reading this book, as well as setting and plot sequence. Students are just about finished with their realistic fiction writing pieces. Next week we will have a sharing party to read each other's stories. Grammar continues to be woven in through our mentor sentence books.
MATH: Students in all classes are working on long division up to a 4 digit number divided by a 1 digit number. A test will be taken later this week on this concept. Your child should know which day his/her test is going to be.
SS: We have been learning about the historic Native Americans of Ohio. We study where they came from and why, what their traditions were, what they wore, their homes, food and clothing. We will take a break and head into science after this section is over.
Place Project: We had a great trip to Centennial Park! Thank you to Mrs. Brown for walking down with us! While there, students found their special spots and made some observations about man made vs natural things in their surroundings. Then, each child worked on writing acrostic poems about the nature they saw. Finally, we observed a specific area of the stream to look at weathering and erosion. It was a great trip!
Here are some pics from our Veteran's Day ceremony, our trip to Centennial Park, and COSI!

Busy Times!
We have had three great weeks here in 4K! From Caesar's Creek to the Fun Run to SunWatch and all things in between, there is a lot of good happening!
ELA: Students finished reading their dog books. Along the way, we practiced a variety of reading skills, including compare and contrast, sequencing events, summarizing, and discussing a book. We are also in the early stages of our realistic fiction piece of writing. This is the first piece of writing that we will take through all stages of the writing process together. So far, students have come up with an idea and are developing their main characters. Students also independently wrote a Halloween piece of writing. These will certainly be fun to read! We continue to practice spelling and grammar skills each week as well.

MATH: Students have finished chapters 2 and 3 which focused on multiplication. We are in the midst of the test that covers both chapters. Chapter 4 will focus on division...yes, LONG DIVISION! Fact fluency will be IMPERATIVE during this chapter!
SS/SCIENCE: We finished up our unit on life science with our study of fossils. Students learned about all types of fossils and how they are formed, then put our learning from that unit to work on our trip to Caesar's Creek. When we got back, students worked hard to sketch and label their fossils like scientists would. Now we have moved back to Social Studies, where we began our study of Ohio history with the very first people to come to North America across the land bridge called Beringia. We have just finished studying the prehistoric people of Ohio, and our field trip to SunWatch brought this learning to life! Students really enjoyed seeing what this Native American village may have looked like all those years ago.

We had our first field trip project presented in class and I know many other students have visited their site! Please start having your children turn these projects in as soon as they are complete so we can spread them out between now and December 8.
FUN RUN: What a great event the Fun Run was! Not only did the kids have a blast running to the high school, but the talk given by Trudy Ludwig was very meaningful and applicable. She gave the students a bunch of tools to use in case they encounter bullying. It was a great day!
As you can see, we've had a great few weeks here in 4th grade! THANK YOU for filling out all the permission slips, for volunteering to drive, for sending in money and packing lunches. These experiences were great for the kids and, I hope, really enhanced their learning!

October Already?!
Things are moving along so quickly! I just looked at the calendar, and we are already 2 weeks away from the end of the first quarter! I guess time flies when you're having fun!
We are all settled in now and getting to the meat of our work. Here's what we've been up to:
READING: We finished our myth unit with allusion posters. These are hanging in the hallway outside of our room and look great! Students did a great job sharing allusions and their meanings! We have moved into reading various books with dogs as the main character. Students were allowed to give me their top 2 book choices, and are placed in book groups based on their choice. Throughout this unit we are reviewing key reading skills, such as cause and effect, sequencing events, character traits, and writing about our reading. Ask your child which book s/he is reading.
WRITING: Realistic fictional narratives will be our first type of writing that we take through all the stages. This week, we looked at an example of this type of writing, and began the first stage of writing, brainstorming. We started by brainstorming small moments in our lives, moments we felt strong emotions, and stories we wish existed. These will help us figure out what story we want to write. Ask your child what idea s/he has for his/her story.
MATH: All students are coming to the end of chapter 2 and moving right into chapter 3. Since both chapters are about multiplication, and one builds on the other, we are going to combine the two chapter tests into one. You can help by making sure your child completes his/her Reflex math requirement, as well as checking in about other homework each night. Have your child show you how to multiply a 1 digit number by a 3 or 4 digit number.
SCIENCE: We have been learning about living things, ecosystems, and the balance of life. Students have read about animal and plant adaptations, food chains and food webs, and a variety of ecosystems. This will lead us into a study of fossils that will help prepare us for our field trip to CAESAR's CREEK! Ask your child how a small change to an ecosystem can affect the balance.
TESTING: Next week, starting on Tuesday, October 3, all fourth graders will take IOWA and Cognitive Abilities tests. We will test each morning after specials until close to lunch. Please make sure your child gets a good night's sleep, has a full healthy breakfast, and brings a snack to school as well. Also, please don't schedule any appointments for this time.
REMINDERS: Don't forget about the Social Studies field trip project...December 8 will be here before you know it!
Another field trip permission slip, this time to SunWatch Indian Village, came home on Friday...please send it back with $5 by Thursday.
If you haven't signed up for a conference with me, please send me an email and we can schedule one!

Settling In...
The students are settling in very well to 4th grade! We are busy, busy, busy throughout each day. Here's what we've been up to these last 2 weeks:
September 11: Thank you for allowing your child to interview you about your Sept. 11 experience. The students were eager to share what they learned from you, and to put your "one word" into our art piece. Caden shared the story of his great aunt, Ann C. Judge, who was on board the flight that hit the Pentagon. Really made this tragedy real for our students.

Sharing our stories

Our one word...

Our 9/11 art piece
ELA: Our focus has been the allusions that we use in our language that come from ancient myths. Students have read quite a few different myths in various formats. Presenting a myth poem to the class was fun! Students really enjoyed the reverso poems! They also LOVE reader's theater! Finally, to end this unit, students were partnered up to create a poem about one of the allusions they read about. Ask your child which allusion his/her poster is about!
We have also continued on with vocabulary study and mentor sentence work centered around our mentor texts. Students are really enjoying the variety of picture books being shared in our classroom, along with our chapter book, The Girl Who Could Fly. Ask your child what book s/he is reading for AR in our classroom.
Spelling began this week, after we took a week to practice the routines together. Hopefully you received a packet of information explaining how spelling works in our classroom, and which day is your child's "spelling day". If you did not, please ask your child to find this important packet in his or her desk! Ask your child what day his/her spelling day is!
MATH: We finished chapter one and took a test on it, then moved into chapter 2. This chapter focuses on multiplication by 1 digit numbers. We will teach the students a variety of methods for multiplying numbers. Please allow them to practice ALL methods taught, then to choose the one that works best for them. Also, students should be practicing REFLEX MATH 3+ times per week. This will be a part of the math grade. Has your child been practicing Reflex Math?
SOCIAL STUDIES: We finished up this section of SS by learning about primary and secondary sources. Students practiced looking at various types of resources and then deciding which type it was. Ask your child what the difference between primary and secondary sources is.
SCIENCE: We began our science unit this week. Students have been reading about animal and plant adaptations, how the environment influences living things, and about instinctual vs. learned behaviors. This unit will lead into a study of ecosystems and fossils. A field trip permission slip came home on Friday for a trip to Caesar's Creek, which will nicely enhance this unit. Ask your child about some animal adaptations.
HAVE A FABULOUS WEEKEND!
